We direct sourced and purchased our shea butter from a small
cooperative organized and ran by women in Ghana. Shea butter production
provides an integral source of income for them, their families and their
community. About the Shea Tree The shea
tree, Vitellaria paradoxa, is native and typically found in a thin band
of unique tropical savannahs ranging from West to East Africa. For generations,
Africans derived a myriad of medicinal and beneficial products from the shea
tree. One such product is 'Shea Butter' which is the resultant lipids or
fat extracted from the ‘nut’ or the seed of the shea fruit produced by the shea
tree. Shea butter production is a very labor intensive process. The Raw Product We import the
raw and unrefined shea butter product which is an ivory, off-white, to a pale cream
color. You may have also seen and/or used a ‘yellow’ shea butter as
well. The ‘yellow’ color varies from a pale to deep yellow and is usually
derived by adding traditional African medicinal herb(s) during shea butter
production and does not change the quality, benefits, or consistency of the
shea butter. The product you purchase from us is just that – raw and
unrefined – and can be used in making many of your skin care products, namely
soap, lotions, balms, creams, and rubs. “Bulk” vs. “Whipped” What is the difference between our ‘bulk’ and ‘whipped’ shea
butter? Our shea butter arrives to us in
55 lbs. (25kg) blocks. Each block is cut
into various small chunks and/or 1lb., 5 lbs., 10 lbs. or 20 lbs. chunks/blocks and is
referred to as ‘bulk’ for distribution. Our
‘whipped’ shea butter is just whipped (i.e. like in a mixer) by us and contains
NO additives. The ‘whipped’ shea butter
is very soft and smooth, spreads easily, and a little goes a long way. The ‘whipped’ shea butter is sold in 8 fl. oz.
and 16 fl. oz. containers weighing out at 5 oz. and 9 oz. in them respectively. Beneficial
